Use Coconut Oil for Glowing Winter Skin and Hair

Do you keep a jar of coconut oil in your kitchen? Here are two reasons you’ll want to stash one in the bathroom too. One: your skin, and two: your hair.

Coconut Oil for Hair and Skin

Both your hair and your skin take a beating during the winter because the air is drier — both inside and out. That makes it hard for skin cells and hair follicles to hold on to their vital moisture. In addition, if you’re like other folks, you’re taking long, hot showers in the winter — and that can further dry your skin. To make matters worse, you may be dehydrated in the colder months because when it’s not hot, you’re not prompted by thirst to drink. The result? Dry, cracking winter skin and brittle, easily broken winter hair.

Benefits of Coconut Oil on Skin

How does coconut oil help your skin? It all comes down to the fats. Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids, a special kind of fat that has been shown to increase lipid levels in the skin’s surface.[1] As a result, coconut oil smooths the skin and helps it maintain its moisture.[2] In fact, a study of folks with dry, rough, scaly skin found that coconut oil increased skin hydration and reduced water loss. [3]

What Does Coconut Oil Do for Hair?

Research has also shown that coconut oil benefits hair. In a study published in The Journal of Cosmetic Science, the tropical oil was shown to reduce hair breakage. That’s probably because, as another study from the same journal reported, it penetrates the hair follicles better than other common ingredients in conditioners, such as mineral oil.[4] Simply rub a small amount of coconut oil in your hands to warm and melt it slightly, then put it on damp hair (not dripping wet, or the oil will glide off), from mid shaft to the tips. Then comb it through.
