With our busy lives and schedules, powering up with the right fuel your body needs (i.e. fruits and veggies) is necessary for sustained energy to get all your tasks checked off the to-do list. If we’re going to get through the craziness of deadlines, kids' extracurricular activities, school and tests, then we must take fueling up seriously. This article will focus on why smoothies might be the support you’ve been searching for.

Sugary breakfast drinks or lattes packed with processed sugar lack the fuel your body craves for lasting energy. We will be the first to admit that it is not easy to avoid the white chocolate mocha on the way to work. But maybe, if you had a delicious alternative, passing up on the sugary beverages would not be such a battle in the morning. We propose that smoothies are one alternative beverage choice to solve the energy crisis you may be experiencing throughout the day. Check out these three reasons why ditching the Frappuccino might not be as hard as you thought.

  1. You’ll have more sustained energy.

The food we consume plays an important role in our energy levels throughout the day. Fruit provides the body with natural sugars (fructose and glucose) that can be metabolized into energy, usually in less than 30 minutes. It’s a nutritious way to get a healthy burst of energy.

Bananas, for example—you get natural sugars and healthy, complex carbohydrates! Since they are low in fiber and quickly digestible you will get a quick energy boost. But if you need to sustain the energy a bit more, then pair it up with some protein powder or a healthy fat. One great option is almond butter—a delicious addition to any smoothie.

Nothing beats the rich green color of a smoothie made with spinach. Why spinach? It’s full of iron, calcium and natural vitamins which are a key parts of your body’s energy production. Say adios to that afternoon energy dip if you slurp this up for an afternoon snack. Another veggie for the win! (1)

  1. Your cells and brain could use a boost!

A quick way to get that boost is through healthy fats and essential fatty acids! Adding fats to your smoothie might not seem like an obvious addition. But before you move on, give us a second to explain.

By adding some Omega-3s like flax oil to your smoothies you are getting the essential fatty acids you need to support heart health and provide your brain cells with the ability to function well. Omega-3s are essential to promote and maintain brain cell membranes. Omega-3s support healthy skin, hair and nails, too!

It's as simple as 2 tablespoons! If you are picky on taste we have 12 flavors of Omega Swirl to choose from. The flavors range from Orange Cream to Strawberry Banana to Mango Fusion, providing the Omega-3s your body needs and the delicious flavor your taste buds can’t resist. Check them out here.

Additionally, we love including a heaping teaspoon of coconut oil to our smoothies! Coconut oil has antibacterial properties, provides an energy source for the brain, and can be an appetite suppressant. Coconut oil is full of MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) that are converted into energy and have been studied for their potential in supporting heart and metabolic health. Check them out here.

  1. We’re not getting the proper amount of fruits and veggies that we need.

Americans eat 1.5 cups of vegetables daily, on average, the USDA finds. But the national nutritional guidelines recommend 2 to 3 cups a day for adults. We need to make sure we are getting the right vegetables! More than half of our vegetable intake comes from potatoes and tomatoes whereas only 10 percent comes from dark green and orange vegetables like spinach, carrots and sweet potatoes. (2) It needs to be the other way around.

An easy way to incorporate a variety of vegetables and fruit is to make a smoothie like our Detox Green Smoothie. Check out the recipe below and give it a go! You won’t be disappointed.
