DIY Coconut Oil Headache Salve + Free Printable Labels

by Shannon Remy on December 12, 2017

dfiy-coconut-oil-headache-salve.jpg‘Tis the season to be jolly… but that’s easier said than done if you are suffering from a headache. Let’s face it, the holiday season is full of potential headache triggers: stress, lack of sleep, airline travel, one too many cocktails – even seemingly innocent things like scented candles and bright holiday lights can bring on the pain.

Natural Headache Relief

My very first line of defense for any headache: a big glass of water. It’s the simplest, most tried-and-true instant headache cure. But if that doesn’t do the trick, here’s a quick and easy recipe for a natural headache salve to use on your temples and the back of your neck for some soothing relief. This salve also makes a thoughtful, but inexpensive, holiday gift or stocking stuffer. Go to the link at the end of this post for some free printable labels you can use on small jars or tins for your friends and family.

Monster Headache / Mommy’s Got a Headache Salve Recipe:

  • 3 Tbsp Barlean’s Organic Coconut Oil
  • 1 Tbsp organic bees wax pastilles
  • 15 drops peppermint essential oil
  • Small containers with lids

Put the coconut oil and bees wax into a glass measuring cup and melt in the microwave for 1-2 minutes (depending on the strength of your microwave). The glass measuring cup makes pouring the salve into containers really easy. Once the oil and wax are melted, allow to cool for about a minute and stir in the peppermint oil (a chopstick or wooden skewer works well for stirring). Carefully pour the mixture into small containers with lids.

Give the mixture at least two hours to set up. The beeswax in this recipe will prevent the mixture from melting in normal-to-warm temperatures, but salves should be stored in a cool location where they will remain semi-solid. If stored correctly, salves will last for 1-3 years.
