There’s a lot to think about when packing for fun adventures during the summer. From the swim suit to the tent to the cooler to the marshmallows for roasting, you have a lot to remember. There is just one more item you won't want to forget to pack this summer. It's coconut oil and here's why:

  • Sunburn Saver: No one likes ending a beautiful summer day only to find that you’ve been burnt to a crisp. Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen this summer, but if it does Coconut Oil is here to help! It’s no surprise that this powerful, natural moisturizer would also help sunburns. People around the world have been using coconut oil to help protect and replenish their skin for thousands of years. It contains antioxidants that help to fight the free-radical damage of the sun on our skin cells. The low molecular size of the fats in the oil make it absorb easily and quickly into our skin. When our skin is damaged from a sunburn the anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral aspects of the MCTs in coconut oil aid in protecting our skin while it heals. Here is a quick recipe: take a ½ cup of coconut oil and add a few drops of essential oils like lavender (2 drops) or peppermint (1 drop) or either aloe or apple cider vinegar. If you are going to be camping or at the beach all day, we recommend keeping the oil in cooler temperatures. Nothing beats cool coconut oil on a sunburn. (1)
  • Tanning Oil: Ditch those chemically-filled sun tan oils and try using coconut oil instead. We fully encourage everyone to wear sunscreen to protect his or her skin, but there are more chemical free options than you think. And guess what?! Coconut oil naturally has SPF of 4. And did we mention it's a superb moisturizer? (2,3)
  • Bugs be gone! We all know that the wonderful summer nights can usher in some pesky bugs. Mix coconut oil with some essential oils like peppermint, tea tree, or rosemary and simply apply to your skin. This should help deter those nasty mosquitoes and other creepy crawlers. (2)
  • Hydrate the HAIR: As much as we all love the tousled beach hair, it is equally as important to keep our hair hydrated and protected. Spending extra time in the sun and water is a sure way to dry out and damage your hair if you aren’t careful. Rub a small amount of coconut oil in your hands and then run them through your hair before you hit the beach. Adding this simple step of protection will support your hair staying hydrated in the heat and it helps hair growth! (P.S. if you want to hydrate your hair even more, try rubbing a handful of coconut oil in your hair before bed. Then wash it out in the morning. This is a sure way to keep your hair healthy, hydrated, and beach ready!). (2)
  • Shaving: Try replacing shaving cream with coconut oil to keep your legs feeling smooth and moisturized all summer long. Grab a small amount of coconut oil and rub over your legs and start shaving. One quick caution…Shaving with coconut oil can make the tub a little slippery. Be sure to wipe it down with a little towel after your shower or bath to avoid slipping! (2)
