Healthy Snacks to Refuel after a Workout

After a workout, it’s super important to refuel. Our muscles are like sponges post sweat session ready to absorb every nutrient they possibly can to rebuild and recover. Here are some of my favorite post-workout snacks with added ingredients from Barlean’s which help feed our bodies post-workout:

I personally LOVE a protein shake after I do a hardcore strength training session, Pilates or yoga class. One of my favorite things to do is add some Barlean’s flavored flax oil to a smoothie to get my Omega 3s. I start with unsweetened almond milk then squeeze in a teaspoon of the strawberry banana Omega Swirl followed by a half of a frozen banana, 3-4 fresh strawberries and a scoop of vanilla flavored protein powder. I throw in a half a cup of ice and blend it all in to a tasty frothy smoothie that’s full of protein and anti-inflammatory Omega-3s. If I’m using a chocolate flavored whey or pea protein powder, I add the blackberry flavored Barlean’s Omega Swirl, frozen or fresh blackberries, ice and skim milk, almond milk or water. Oh and I almost forgot my all time favorite product the Chocolate Greens—this is to die for and so good in a shake. It’s high in antioxidants and also probiotics.

Another great option after a workout, is a greek yogurt with a half cup of blueberries and a sprinkle or Barlean’s flax, chia and coconut blend. I truly live off of this blend of seeds and unsweetened coconut. I use it in everything from baking (pancakes for Timothy) to breakfast to snacks. It’s so tasty and lasts for quite a while. I store mine in the freezer and sprinkle it on my yogurt and vary the berries, sometimes I use raspberries other times blueberries. All berries have antioxidants in them, which are great for recovery; and the nutrient dense superfoods from the chia, coconut and flax help with digestion and fueling the body. You can portion out servings into snack size Ziploc bags and carry them with you in your gym bag to add to a yogurt, cottage cheese or smoothie after your sweat session if you’re on the go.

Lastly, coconut oil drizzled piece of whole grain toast with nut butter is to die for! It’s always best to combine some nutrient dense carbohydrates with protein and a bit of healthy fat after you’ve expended a ton of energy. You can make this snack and bring it with you or if you’re home, I recommend toasting a piece of Ezekial or any healthy whole grain bread then smearing a teaspoon of nut butter on top. Layer half of a thinly sliced banana and drizzle some Barlean’s coconut oil on top for the perfect post-workout snack.

With winter approaching and many people inclined toward seasonal depression, it’s a good idea to stay active and consume Omega-3s, which really do help combat the blues and keep our bodies and mind fueled and strong.
