5 Tips to Support Extraordinary Health

After completing medical school and residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery, I realized I had learned nothing about health. I only learned about diseases and how to suppress symptoms using drugs and surgery. In 1996 I was introduced to Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old system of holistic health. My passion then turned to teaching the principals of Ayurveda and how to achieve extraordinary health.

Here are 5 important health tips:

Tip #1: Eat fresh, organically grown fruits and vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables—every day.

Organically grown plants— particularly those in the cruciferous family, for example, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale are filled with a variety nutrients, vitamins, and plant chemicals that act as powerful natural preventative medicines.

Tip #2: Eat 2–3 tablespoons of ground organic flaxseeds every day.

Flaxseeds are the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids, are high fiber, and contain one hundred times more health-promoting lignans than any other known edible plant. You can take a lignan supplement instead, such as Brevail made by Barlean’s. Additional omega-3 oils every day is also important. Tip #3: Go to bed by 10:00 p.m. and get up before 6:00 a.m.

Recommended by Ayurveda 5,000 years ago, modern research has confirmed that sleeping seven to eight hours a night during these ideal times has been shown to be one of the most powerful components for good health. Sleep is essential for our body to recharge, detoxify and balance hormones.

Tip #4: Embrace at least thirty minutes of aerobic activity every day.

We were designed to move! Even brisk walking for 30 minutes a day can do wonders for your health. Recent research has shown that not moving—sitting for 5 or more hours a day—is extremely damaging for your health. For optimal health, get up from your chair every hour to stretch and move.

Tip #5: Nurture your relationships

According to numerous studies, our relationships have more of an effect on us than our diet, smoking, and even our genetics. Loving supportive relationships are the best medicine. If you have people in your life who are toxic, bid them adieu!

You have tremendous influence over your health. By following many of these simple tips, you can easily tip the odds in your favor of living a long, radiantly healthy life.
